The Sciencentre at Queensland Museum South Bank will celebrate its first birthday on Sunday 18 September.

The State Government is seeking applications for the role of Public Interest Monitor.

Police Minister Judy Spence said suitable candidates were being sought to fill the position, which requires an independent person who oversees the use by police of surveillance warrants and covert search warrants.

Editorial
A new report by the University of Sydney’s Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies and Elsham, the Institute for Human Rights Study and Advocacy based in Jayapura was launched at Parliament House in Canberra on the 18 August. The report titled “Genocide in West Papua? the role of the Indonesian state apparatus and a current needs assessment of the Papuan people”, details the ongoing human rights abuses, the systematic violence, including rape, arson and torture, in the territory of West Papua. The report documents recent military operations such as the one in the Puncak Jaya district in West Papua's central highlands. During this military operation a large number of villages were burned, livestock and food gardens destroyed resulting in more than 6000 people fleeing to the bush in fear of their lives where many faced starvation. The Rev Socratez Yoman, head of the Baptist church in West Papua who flew down especially for the reports launch.
