Cruelty and xenophobia in the 'lucky country'

The Australian writer Donald Horne meant the title of his celebrated book, The Lucky Country, as irony. "Australia is a lucky country run by second-rate people who share its luck", he lamented in 1964, describing much of the Australian elite as unfailingly unoriginal, race-obsessed and in thrall to imperial power and its wars.

Government policies killing Aborigines

On January 18, the Australian ran a story on a leaked report commissioned by the Peter Beattie Labor Queensland government on the shocking living conditions for Aborigines in Queensland (see accompanying article). Green Left Weekly asked Sam Watson, Murri leader and member of the Socialist Alliance, about this and the ongoing struggle for justice for Indigenous people in Australia.

Late last year, Green Left Weekly's Kerryn Williams spoke to the assistant secretary of the Sudanese Communist Party (SCP), Suleman Hamid El Haj, in Khartoum about political developments in Sudan since the January 2005 signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA). The CPA ended the two-decade-long war between Sudan's central government in Khartoum and the south.

Suleman explained that while the SCP was sceptical of the CPA and criticised many of the agreement's elements, the party supported its signing. "Firstly because it stopped the war. There was so many lives lost and a lot of destruction in the south. The war was an obstacle to development. The government was spending US$2.5 million on the war every day.

Venezuela's RCTV Acts of Sedition

On December 28, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez Frias delivered his annual "greeting speech" to the National Armed Forces (FAN) and announced the operating license of TV station Radio Caracas Television (known as RCTV) broadcasting on VHF Channel 2 won't be renewed when it expires on May 27, 2007. The station played a leading role, along with the other four major commercial private television channels in the country controlling 90% of the TV market, in instigating and supporting the 2002 aborted two-day coup against President Chavez. Later in the year they acted together again in similar fashion as an active participant in the economically destructive 2002-03 main trade union confederation (CTV) - chamber of commerce (Fedecameras) lockout and industry-wide oil strike that included sabotage against the state oil company PDVSA costing it overall an estimated $14 billion in lost revenue and damage.

1) Civil war in Iraq: we continue to support the resistance

We speak plain language: the Sunni-Shiite conflict in Iraq has grown in the course of the last six months into a sort of civil war.

It helps little, to simply argue against this position by pointing out that all this has been caused by the machinations of the USA and of Zionism - as many of our friends in the resistance like to do. Surely the USA contributed substantially to this split, without however carrying this on their banner from the outset. For the civil war does not indicate by any means the success of Washington, but its total fiasco, its complete loss of control of the situation.

It is again with great sadness to advise that a 29 year old Cairns mother, denied access to her daughter, committed suicide early yesterday morning (Sunday, 21 January) in the Cairns CBD area, just two (2) days before Attorney-General Philip Ruddock announces yet another round of Family Court legislation amendments.

Cairns and surrounding districts' adversely affected fathers, mothers, grandparents, non-custodial extended families and supporters are expected to express their frustration at the current draconian Family Court system, which deprives children of EQUAL parenting and responsibility, at a peaceful rally tomorrow (Tuesday 23 January).

As expected, arrogance, scorn, ridicule & derision was the tone of the day from the judge, the plaintiff's barrister & lawyer, leading to no stay being granted again. Justice McDougall did not disappoint me. He was full of his own glory or was it all just a front, shitting himself if he stuffed up.

The Judge was scripted.
No doubt about it.

Phil Atkinson & Mick Gallagher were there with Mick giving out Love For Life fliers in the packed court room while I was on stage with the judge. Phil says they were reading the fliers intently.

I told the judge that Supreme Court judges were arrogant, containing highly developed intellects that were very clever and crafty, determined to ignore truth & justice without any empathy, compassion or love for this nations citizens.
