Palm Island and self determination

Submitted by Anonymous on Tue, 31/07/2007 - 21:01

The Palm Island store is currently owned by the Queensland Government. It charges inflated prices to subsidise the transport of goods to other Aboriginal communities in Queensland. The government has recently announced that the store is to be privatised, and there are two competitors for the tender. One is the Palm Island Community Store Aboriginal Corporation (PICSAC) and the other is a gaggle of bureacrats and mainly non-Palm Islanders supported by the state government.

THE CHALLENGE

Nearly two years after Queensland going to the polls on the basis that the Premier wanted to fix Queensland’s failed child safety system, a Child Death Safety Review Committee Report has produced a scathing analysis of the Department.

The Report identified around half of the child death cases involving the Department of Child Safety were not actually reported to a special review committee within the legislated six-month timeframe.

Obscurity has been Cheney's hallmark since he took office in January 2001, and that's the way he likes it. "Am I the evil genius in the corner that nobody ever sees come out of his hole?" he quipped in 2004. "It's a nice way to operate, actually." Cheney is ... the most powerful vice- president in American history. "He has expanded the power of the vice-president fiftyfold," says Bruce Fein, a lawyer who served in the Reagan administration.

Broader Privilege Claimed In Firings

Submitted by WantToKnow.info on Mon, 30/07/2007 - 14:21

Bush administration officials unveiled a bold new assertion of executive authority yesterday in the dispute over the firing of nine U.S. attorneys, saying that the Justice Department will never be allowed to pursue contempt charges initiated by Congress against White House officials once the president has invoked executive privilege. Under federal law, a statutory contempt citation by the House or Senate must be submitted to the U.S.

Power Without Limits

<p style='text-align:justify;font-family:Arial;font-size:10.0pt'>The Bush administration, which has been pushing presidential power to new extremes, is reportedly developing an even more dangerous new theory of executive privilege. It says that if Congress holds White House officials in contempt for withholding important evidence in the United States attorney scandal, the Justice Department simply will not pursue the charges. This stance tears at the fabric of the Constitution and upends the rule of law.
