BANGKOK - Environmentalists forecast a grim future for planet Earth on Thursday, predicting that droughts, heatwaves and hurricanes will become increasingly common and more severe if global warming is allowed to continue unchecked.

North Queensland's ideal tropical location and being a research centre has it primed for a key role in driving the Smart State's Strategy, Premier Peter Beattie said today.

Queensland researchers are helping to protect the environment and the lot of poor farmers in Vietnam by converting waste brewery yeast into fruit fly bait, State Primary Industries and Fisheries Minister Henry Palaszczuk said.
