"At a time when political party leaders can find millions of dollars for 'football clubs', they have refused any financial assistance to community organisations such as Rockhampton's Wahroonga Centre, also known as 'CIRYAR'," said Selwyn Johnston.

"CIRYAR is a ‘free' counselling and support service for young people aged 13 -21 years who are at risk, or suicide, are self-harming or who have mental health issues."

"This community program has been extremely successful with 180 young people receiving intensive counselling and support. Furthermore, CIRYAR staff has provided assistance to more than 1000 young people through small group programs and initiatives in local high schools and the community," said Selwyn Johnston

CIRYAR was established in 2003 as a Federally funded pilot program and addressed a gap in service provision to young people in the Rockhampton community. Despite widespread community support, CIRYAR has been unable to obtain sufficient government funding to continue this program and if funding is not obtained, CIRYAR will close mid 2005.

"What I also find appalling is even though local Federal MP, Kirsten Livermore, is fully aware of the situation, she says she is waiting for a Labour 'policy' on this issue before she can comment! So now Rockhampton's parents need a 'policy' from the Labour party before consideration for any assistance is given to saving local children's and young adults lives!" said Selwyn Johnston.

"The situation appears similar with Liberal candidate for Capricornia, Di Kuntschik, while the Nationals candidate John Lever is yet to appear."

"Whatever happened to the days when your local MP represented you, without having to ask some party hack in Canberra for permission first?" concluded Selwyn Johnston.
