1) Free Abduljabbar al-Kubaysi!

Nov 22-27, week of protest in front of US embassies

Several weeks have pasted since the kidnapping of Abduljabbar al-Kubaysi on Sept 3 by US occupation forces in Baghdad. Abduljabbar, leader of the Iraqi Patriotic Alliance, has dedicated himself to the construction of a political front of all the Resistance forces.

Despite the intensive attempts of his wife and his family no information whatsoever has been released so far by the US occupation authorities. A case has been filed at the Red Cross in Geneva by Abduljabbar's wife, but not even the Red Cross did get any response from the occupation forces.

Rumours say that Abduljabbar is being detained at the notorious US prison facility at the Baghdad airport. However, this could not be confirmed so far.

All this forms part of the US offensive against the popular resistance with daily bomb terror against its strongholds like Falluja or Samarra. The US is turning to a counterinsurgency war according to the model of the dirty war against the Central American liberation movements during the 80s. It is not by accident that John Negroponte became the new "US ambassador" to Iraq. He has the notorious record of having pulled the strings of the death squadrons. Tens of thousands were killed, tortured and disappeared under his supervision. Now these skills in paramilitary terror against a resisting people are again urgently required by the Pentagon. With the disappearance of Abduljabbar al-Kubaysi an example should be made preventing the political articulation of the resistance.

Therefore we call upon all democratic and anti-imperialist forces to protest in front of US embassies demanding:

Disclose the thereabouts of Abduljabbar according to the Geneva Convention!
Release Abduljabbar!
Free all war and political prisoners!
Withdraw the occupation troops!

2) Agreement over disarming - Muqtada once again ambiguous

Without any doubt the recent deal cut between the leader of the Shia resistance movement Muqtada as-Sadr and the occupation forces over a partial disarming of his militia in their Baghdad stronghold Sadr City is a political setback for the resistance. The political signal thus conveyed to the Iraqi people and its resistance movement is one of moderation and compromise with the occupants.

The more than vague agreement stipulates that in exchange of surrendering heavy weapons and dissolving the Mahdi militia, the US armed forces will cease its ongoing bombing campaign on the giant slum area of the capital. Control should be given to the police forces created by the occupants. Meanwhile it remains unclear whether the US forces will continue to patrol within the quarter.

Even the Western media has been reporting that the return of heavy weaponry has been scarce so that the deadline had to be extended several time. Still there is no definitive end in sight. On the contrary, recent media reports suggest that fighters are using the occasion to get rid of their outdated equipment while there is an influx of new arms to Sadr City which the US has troubles to impede.

And more important is the difference between what Muqtada negotiating with the occupation forces and telling to the media on one hand and what he is instructing to his hierarchy on the other. Like after the show down in Najaf in August he seems to change the real content of the agreement on the ground.

So it remains to be seen whether the Mahdi militia will really disarm and dissolve itself and surrender control to the collaboration police. Given the strong determination of especially the poorest lawyers of society to resist the occupation a full capitulation will not be accepted. So it is not only a question of mere hope that the agreement will be re-interpreted in favour of the resistance but it is even likely.

The reason for the ascendancy of Muqtada to the politically strongest segment of the popular resistance is first of all due to the anti-imperialist pressure of the poorest masses who are determined to fight. If he fully turned to the occupation then he would be pushed aside similar to Ayatollah al-Sistani with the difference that the latter remains the highest-ranking cleric to be honoured while as-Sadr is marginal within the Shia cleric hierarchy.

Actually Muqtada continues to playing a double game. On one hand he maintains the card of the resistance, on the other he does not completely slam the door for an agreement with the quisling regime depending on the role he might be offered.

What is really all about are the elections which is the last political asset the occupation forces retain in order to give a base to their puppet regime. Not only Muqtada but also other oscillating forces did not spell out a clear position. They happen to speak of participating in an ominous "political process". What exactly does this mean? It could be interpreted as to the construction of a political resistance front or also as to the participation at the US sponsored election spectacle. This ambiguity is certainly not accidental.

The anti-imperialist forces must boycott the elections and thus destroy the US’ last political resort. If Muqtada called for such a boycott this would already amount in a half-way defeat for the occupants. In order to avoid that the US will be forced to invent some incentive to keep him in. His recent agreement over Sadr City could be forerunner.

So in the final instance everything boils down to the political alternative the resistance can poise against the elections. According to our modest opinion it can only be the political resistance front as the expression of the popular and armed resistance heading for a democratic constituent assembly convened by the resistance under the indispensable precondition of the complete withdrawal of the occupation troops.

Boycott the US sponsored elections!

Withdrawal of the occupation as the precondition of a constituent assembly!

Victory to the resistance!

3) Turkey's accession a threat for Europe?

On the alliance between the Turkish oligarchy, the US and Europe

The recent decision of the European Union to commence negotiations over a possible accession of Turkey caused a wave of chauvinist reactions. They inscribe themselves in the pattern of the "clash of civilisations" regarding predominantly Islamic societies as at the same time inferior and dangerous – hence to be fought.

We decidedly refuse this cheap chauvinist mobilisation which in finally will not and does not want to fight the enlargement of the Union, but only serves to degrade the status of the Eastern and Southern European people being integrated within the Union.

On the contrary we are aware that the imperialist-capitalist system has forced millions of Turks to migrate to Europe. Already by now they not only form an integral part of the workforce but also of Europe's society as a whole. We therefore not only fight for their equal civil and labour rights but also that they are recognised as a constitutive nation of Europe (one without territory).

Our reasons to oppose the accession of Turkey to the EU are different ones:

1) We oppose the entire EU as the main instrument of the European bourgeoisies to implement the liberalist policy directed against the interests of the popular masses. We fight for the exit from the Union with the aim to smash it altogether. Thus to refuse any new accession is the only logic consequence.

2) Especially in Eastern Europe and on the Balkans the enlargement of the Union acquires a neo-colonial character. While their economies are being dismantled, the best pieces are swallowed by multinationals. Whoever resists is being aggressed by all means. The outstanding example was the war on Yugoslavia which not only refused to subordinate to the geo-political interests of the West but also to implement the liberalist dictates of the IMF & Co. But there are other instructive examples like Slovakia during the period of Meciar who took a critical position on both NATO and EU and thus was nearly put under sanctions, or today Lukashenko's Belarus as well as Moldavia.

3) The planned accession of Turkey is in no way a move to soften the strategic grip the US has been exerting over the country. On the contrary the US is one of the main backers of the accession. Washington wants to use Turkey with is powerful US-led military as a lever within the European Union. In this way they not only want to secure that the EU remains within the American global system but also draw them closer to their aggressive approach to the Middle East.

Nevertheless the historic left is strongly advocating Turkey's accession in the name of multi-culturalism in Europe and democracy in Turkey. Again and again they demonstrate that they have been transforming themselves in auxiliary forces of the Americanist liberalist capitalist mainstream.

Also in Turkey the historic left as well as the Kurdish national movement has been adopting a pro-EU stance. They hope to be able to use Brussels as a means to at the same time curb the influence of the military oligarchy and to avert what they perceive as Islamist danger.

However, the longed for democratic changes will be only cosmetic ones:

The promised reforms on the Kurdish question will not touch the strategic interests of the military to preserve the full control over Kurdistan as has been the policy not only of the US but also of Germany since the Kurdish uprising broke out in the mid 80s. In several other places like in the Basque country the EU has displayed its support for savage repression and its refusal for the right of national self-determination.

The same is the case with the ongoing repression against the remaining revolutionary movement with thousands of political prisoners who are being tortured. Brussels has already absolved Ankara stating that there is no systematic breach of the basic civic rights in Turkey.

Regarding the sacred secular character of the state there seems to be a transversal united front ranging from the notorious National Security Council (MGK) to the historic left passing by all the EU advocates - while the popular masses increasingly hope to defend their social and political rights by means of the Islamic current.

An astonishing example are the French-type laws imposed only some years ago which ban the scarf in public office and on universities. Already in France these reactionary and anti-democratic laws excluding an oppressed minority which dares to voice dissent must be fought. In a predominately Islamic society they are even worse, armouring the exclusive privileges of the oligarchic secular capitalist elite.

In the last instance it is only the interest of this elite the EU is concerned about. For the social and democratic rights of the popular masses they will not give a shit!

See also the case of the two Turkish militants of the "Revolutionary People's Liberation Front" (DHKC) who have been arrested in Italy along with three leaders of the Anti-imperialist Camp on April 1, 2004, on charge of terrorism. Avni Er and Zeynep Kilic are still being detained. The savage amalgam presented by the prosecution shows the full support Italy and in the last instance the EU is lending towards the Turkish oligarchy which seized power in the military coup of 1980 backed by NATO:

4) ESF: Between resistance and co-opting

by Lars Akerhaug, Norway

London the weekend 15th to 17th of October 20,000 people gathered to co-ordinate the forces against war, the occupation of Iraq, the EU constitution, neo-liberalism and many other important issues. The forum was important before the big rallies the 15th of February, and crucial to mobilize the anti war-movement. Hundreds of seminars and workshops raised questions from both north and south. And even if most of the participants were white intellectuals, also important questions like the resistance in Iraq, Plan Colombia, the campaign against the neo-liberal constitution of Brussels and other anti-imperialist issues were visible.

Still, most of the attention was on the sponsors and official protectors of the conference. ESF in London has bound itself to economical support from Labour-mayor Ken Livingstone, and pro-occupation trade unions loyal to the Labour party. And the resistance against the war party Labour came into the ESF when 200 anarchists "seized" the plenary platform from Ken Livingstone at the forum Saturday 16th of October.

Collaborators at the ESF

But the most important differences came to the fore under the seminars on the anti-war movement and the occupation. The most showing example was the invitation of Subhi Mashadani, from the "Iraqi Federation of Trade Unions", the only "union" acknowledged by the Anglo-American occupation dictatorship. He has toured Britain as a "representative" of trade unions in Iraq. But he has not told about how the US occupiers daily kill and destroy civilian lives. He does not tell about the bombings of Fallujah. He tells about why it's important that the US does not withdraw.

ESF stands unclear on the constitution

Debates around the new constitution of the European Union were thorough. The final call from the ESF launches march 19th as an international day of action against the constitution which is to be approved in Brussels 22-23rd of March 2005. But here again the ESF puts itself in a pitch. The forum does not answer to the very clear question the people of Europe are facing: For or against the new proposition for a charter for the European Union. Again the leadership of the ESF demonstrates how they try to distract the social movements from important issues for the working class and the people.

5) Danish war criminals in the UN Security Council

Danish Committee for a Free Iraq

Denmark has become a member of the UN Security Council. It is a scandal because the Danish government as late as March 2003, with ill-concealed arrogance, violated the UN Charter, joined the illegal US war on Iraq, and is now continuing as an active participant in the just as illegal occupation.

The Danish government are, as an active part in the unprovoked war of aggression against Iraq, war criminals according to the principles of the Nuremberg Trial and should be prosecuted. Instead this government now takes a seat in the most powerful agency of the UN. Unfortunately, this says all about what the UN really is: a place, where international war criminals like Bush, Blair and now also Fogh Rasmussen can sit and accord recognition to their own crimes against innocent countries and peoples in the world.

That Denmark has at all been considered for the UN Security Council is the work of the US. It is a fact that Denmark today not only has a government, which is 100 percent in the pocket of the US, but also possesses an "opposition" whose criticism of the extremely aggressive US foreign policy is simply not visible. Both the Danish government and "opposition" – the whole official political establishment in Denmark – swear by the "War on Terror", which is nothing but a pseudonym for the US war for absolute hegemony over everything and everybody in the world.

It all becomes completely absurd when the Danish government now wants the presidency of the UN Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC) and says that international law is not up-to-date because of the "threat from terror". At the same time, the US-led occupation force, including Denmark, is massively bombing whole Iraqi cities from the air. Every single day "precision bombs", with the Danish government's signature, bury innocent Iraqi men, women and children under rubbles.
