Both Parties Force A Deadly Nuclear Future
Well, it's confirmed. Both parties aim to force us into a deadly nuclear future. Labour will exploit more uranium (did anyone else notice how happy Premier Peter Beattie was with the 'Yes' vote, despite his recent assurances that we in QLD will not be forced to accept more uranium mines?), export cancer and consign future generations to deal with toxic nuclear waste.
HOWARD’S COALITION WILL MAKE US PAY A HUGE PRICE FOR COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY AND EXTREMELY DANGEROUS NUCLEAR POWER. BE UNDER NO ILLUSION - THE NUCLEAR INDUSTRY IS NOT DRIVEN BY ALTRUISTIC MOTIVES TO RESPOND TO GLOBAL WARMING - THEIR BOTTOM LINE IS ALL ABOUT PROFITS, NOT PEOPLE. THERE IS ALMOST NO ACCOUNTABILITY FOR THE RESULTING NUCLEAR WASTE WE ARE LEFT WITH FOR HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF YEARS TO COME. THE NUCLEAR POWER INDUSTRY IS INDELIBLY LINKED WITH THE NUCLEAR WEAPONS INDUSTRY (DO SOME GOOGLING ON SOME BIG WEAPONS MANUFACTURERS LIKE Halliburton) as well as creating Armageddon-like terrorist targets.
Mr. Howard seems to be in as deep denial about renewable energy as he has been about climate change. Solar, wind and thermal energy have proven to effectively provide base load power. The problem for 'business as usual' may be that these industries operate from an infinite and clean resource - this may mean less control and less money to be made by the corporations pulling the strings.
How sad that both these nuclear expansion announcements were made during the anniversary of the worst nuclear accident in history - the Chernobyl meltdown which began on April 26th, 1986. While the powers that be would like us to believe this kind of accident can never be repeated, there are continual accidents and leaks in the nuclear industry all over the world - including a near melt down in Sweden just last year.
The only good news in the federal election campaign ahead is that we do have a viable political option that offers a clean, Green and nuclear free future.
