Shoalwater Bay Peace Convergence needs your support

May 26, 2005

Dear Friends,

On behalf of Brisbane Anti-Bases, I am writing to request your support for the upcoming Shoalwater Bay Peace Convergence.

Brisbane Anti-Bases is a not-for-profit, volunteer network of peace, anti-nuclear and anti-military campaigners. We are working with peace activists around Australia to coordinate the Shoalwater Bay Peace Convergence. The Convergence will be held over the Queen's birthday weekend (June 10-13) and is timed to coincide with the beginning of Australia- US joint military exercise: Operation Talisman Sabre 2005 (TS05).

TS05 runs from June 10 –30, 2005. It has been hailed as one of the largest military exercises to take place in Australia, and will use Queensland, the Northern Territory, and the Tasman, Coral, and Timor Seas. Much of the action this year will take place in and around Shoalwater Bay, Qld, where a new Australia-US joint military training facility is being built.

We are greatly concerned that the exercises will impact negatively on the environment of the region, the community, and our neighbours in the Pacific. Both nuclear powered and nuclear-capable, the exercises are designed to practice aggression, bombing, raiding and invading, rather than defence, and send out a non-peaceful message to our neighbours in the region and further afield .

To demonstrate our concern, we will be gathering from June 10-12 in Rockhampton, the closest major city to Shoalwater Bay, for 48 hours of non-violent resistance to these war games. Solidarity actions are being planned for Darwin, FNQ, Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, and WA.

We would like to invite you or your organisation to be part of the Peace Convergence through your attendance in Rockhampton, your support from afar or through contributions of resources or funds.

We need support with:

 Hiring two mini-buses and a trailor to travel from Brisbane, and another vehicle at Rockhampton

 Subsidising travel, camping, petrol and food for activists in need

 Hiring of hall and equipment for public meeting and possible film screening

 Hiring of cabins in the camp ground that can be used as offices

 Photocopying and production of campaign materials

 Resources - such as banners, materials, paints, paper, walkie talkies, video tapes, film, camping equipment, cooking equipment, water and petrol bottles, etc.

 Media, publicity, and promotion
