(Greens-Media) Allawi executions: Howard owes nation explanation

The chilling claims that Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi shot 7 blind-folded prisoners (Sydney Morning Herald today) last month heaps horror onto horror in the Coalition of the Willing's occupation. It warrants an explanation and action from Prime Minister Howard, Senator Brown said in Hobart today.

"How can Australian troops remain at Allawi's service?" Senator Brown said.

"The credible claims by experienced journalist Paul McGeough are stunning. The immediate question is how did Allawi, who helped install Saddam Hussein, become the White House choice to lead this benighted country into "freedom and democracy?" Senator Brown said.

"Allawi's record is chilling and was well known to both Prime Minister Howard and President Bush. Our PM should tell Australia about his role in this brutal man's promotion. He should return Australia's defence forces from the service of this bloodcurdling brute," Senator Brown said.
