The two protesters who unfurled a banner in Beijing today, saying 'No Olympics in Beijing until Tibet is free' are to be congratulated, Greens Senator Bob Brown said.

Australian citizen and Australia Tibet Council Campaign Coordinator Liam Phelan, 33 from Newcastle, and a US citizen were detained by the Chinese authorities after their peaceful protest this afternoon and their whereabouts is unknown.

"Peaceful protest is a democratic right and I have contacted Foreign Minister Downer's office tonight to ascertain what laws the two activists are alleged to have breached and what process will ensue," Senator Brown said.

"China's democratic credentials will be under scrutiny in the lead-up to the Olympics, including the right of the Tibetans to self-determination and an Olympic team.

"These courageous activists have my full support," said Senator Brown.
