(Greens-Media) Carr Govt finds money for soldiers but not for trains

Greens MP Lee Rhiannon has questioned the priorities of a Carr Government that is unstintingly generous to army reservists while taking a miserly approach to train drivers.

"Special Minister of State John Della Bosca has announced a handsome pay boost for army reservists on the very same day that Premier Bob Carr has told train drivers they should settle for a pittance of a pay rise," Ms Rhiannon said.

"How is the Carr Government ever going to train and retain railway workers when it offers them so little?

"While Carr and his Transport Minister Michael Costa hide from the public in Governor Macquarie Tower, train drivers and station guards face the daily wrath of commuters.

"A generous pay rise would recognise the drivers' hard work and commitment, and the efforts they make to overcome the mismanagement and incompetence above them.

"The top-up in pay for reservists is another stunt designed to make the Carr Government look tough on terrorism, but all it serves to do is expose their warped priorities," Ms Rhiannon said.
