(Greens-Media) Cruising to bad neighbours

"The $450 million purchase of cruise missiles will stir fear in just the countries Australia wants as friends - Indonesia, other ASEAN nations and Papua New Guinea," Greens Senator Bob Brown said today.

"This together with joining the US 'Son of Star Wars' missile defence system is arms escalation and will inevitably promote missile purchase ideas by neighbours like Indonesia.

"Two weeks ago Foreign Minister Alexander Downer was harassing Australia with imaginary North Korean rockets landing on Sydney. This cruise missile action will lead to similar alarm in Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur and Manila. It is another Bush Deputy Sheriff mistake.

"For this amount of money the Howard government could easily feed and send to school every one of the thousands of children going hungry in East Timor," Senator Brown said.
