Foreign Minister Downer's pre-election retreat from his previous hard line against East Timor's right to oil and gas royalties is welcome but not enough, Greens Senator Bob Brown said today.

"The Australian government's handling of this issue has been marred by bullying, high-handedness and greed," Senator Brown.

"Reports that East Timor may now get half rather than one-fifth of the Greater Sunrise field royalties shows not just how justified the East Timorese refusal to accept the deal was but how angry the Australian electorate has been over the mistreatment of East Timor by the Howard government.

"The Greens will not accept any deal which falls short of an internationally arbitrated readjustment of the sea boundaries."
