The Greens have congratulated disendorsed Liberal MP Peter King for contradicting Prime Minister John Howard and speaking up for justice for the Australian inmates held by the Americans at Guantanamo Bay.

"The Bush Administration has held David Hicks and Mamdouh Habib without charge for over two years, in a gross violation of their human rights," Greens candidate for Wentworth Mithra Cox said today.

"Mamdouh Habib was tortured in Egypt and there are allegations he was tortured in Cuba. While the British and Danish governments fought to bring their citizens home, the Howard Government has refused to challenge the US.

"It's good to see Peter King finally criticising the Howard Government's appalling reluctance to stand up for Australian citizens, even if it's taken him three years to speak out.

"The Greens congratulate Mr King on his comments, which reflect the position we have taken ever since the Guantanamo prison camp was set up.

"We hope that as the election looms, Mr King will continue with his newfound opposition to the Government of which he is still a member," Ms Cox said.
