(Greens-Media) Greens welcomes Latham forests bid - but says it must involve serious change

The Greens welcome Labor leader Mark Latham's commitment to announcing a policy on Tasmania's threatened forests, but it must involve serious protection for forests and wildlife, Greens Senator Bob Brown said today.

"The core problem is one company and its four export woodchip mills," Senator Brown said.

"Gunns Pty Ltd's mills will take over 100,000 log trucks loads of Tasmanian forests this year for export to Japan and China with Tasmania providing the resource but getting only 1% of the finished paper price.

"The economics are appalling. So are the destructive impacts on World Heritage value forests like the Tarkine rainforests, Styx Valley of the Giants and beautiful Blue Tier.

"The challenge to both Mr Latham and Prime Minister Howard is to offer rapid structural change of the industry to create more jobs, including through the protection of the iconic forests for future growth of Tasmania's job-rich tourism industry."
