[Greens-Media] Same Sex Bill 24 May 04
Greens Cunningham MP Michael Organ will introduce his Same Sex Relationships (Ensuring Equality) Bill 2004 in the House of Representatives at 1:10 pm this afternoon.

"My Private Member's Bill aims to ensure that people in same sex relationships enjoy the same rights as people in heterosexual relationships by abolishing all sexuality-based discrimination relating to marriage but also to adoption, superannuation, employment entitlements, access to health services and IVF, and the age of consent", Mr. Organ said.

"The changes I am seeking to enshrine in legislation are fundamental aspects of human rights and equity."

"Discrimination on the grounds of sexuality has supposedly been outlawed for many years, yet we still treat people living in long-term loving relationships with same sex partners as second-class citizens in many respects."

"My Bill makes it clear that same sex couples are entitled to the same rights and benefits as anyone else, and the government and opposition will ignore it at their electoral peril", Mr. Organ said.
