The Greens have accused the Liberal MP for Lindsay, Jackie Kelly, of failing to fulfil the primary task of an MP: standing up for the people of her electorate.

"Jackie Kelly's acquiescence in the Howard Government's funding squeeze of the University of Western Sydney is a betrayal of the people of Lindsay," said Greens NSW Senate candidate John Kaye.

"The Greens are joining the protest outside Jackie Kelly's office today because as member for Lindsay, she has failed to act in the interests of her constituents.

"Ms Kelly has failed to defend vital public services and public education in Western Sydney.

"There are about 1,000 Lindsay residents studying at UWS, but they are now facing increased fees or reduced quality of education as a direct result of Coalition policies.

"The Greens call on Ms Kelly to make a clear, unambiguous public statement in support of UWS, and to lobby her colleague Education Minister Brendan Nelson for more funding and a better deal.

"Jackie Kelly's indifference is undermining UWS. She should be championing her local university, not standing mute on the sidelines.

"UWS is reportedly facing a $20 million deficit this year, after its courageous decision to ensure equitable access by not increasing HECS fees.

"The university is being punished for trying to help the disadvantaged. The Greens support UWS, and we'll be fighting for its future in Parliament," said Mr Kaye.
