(Greens-Media) Whaling commission - Campbell should be there

The alarming news of moves to expand killing of whales comes in the face of the Howard government dropping the issue off its priority list, Greens Senator Bob Brown said in Canberra today.

"The statement by new Environment Minister Ian Campbell attacking plans by Iceland and Japan to increase the slaughter of whales under the guise of scientific research is for domestic consumption," Senator Brown said.

"It is not going to make one iota of difference, whereas his presence at the International Whaling Commission meeting would be shown as serious intent by Australia to protect whales.

"The minister should be there."
