(Greens-Media)ACT Radioactive Waste

Greens Senate candidate for the ACT Kerrie Tucker today voiced her concern that neither major party is prepared to rule out national radioactive waste dumps in the ACT, and that we now know that possible sites as close as a kilometre from the suburbs have been considered.

"Local residents should expect open discussion of the sites under consideration and the level of waste they will accommodate, at the very least" Ms Tucker said today.

"We understand the short list of potential sites for long term storage of low to intermediate radioactive waste included, in the ACT, two different blocks near Ginn's Gap, crown land adjacent to or at the Air Navigation facility on Mt Majura (which is about 1 km from the suburbs) and a pine plantation adjacent to Majura firing range."

"It would seem that the idea is to find a site for waste from the new reactor at Lucas Heights, once it has been reprocessed overseas and then shipped back to a nearby port."

"The Greens view is that radioactive waste should be stored at source, above ground for monitoring purposes. However, the whole question of a new reactor also needs to be part of this debate, as we can invest in non-reactor technology for medical isotopes instead, which is considerably safer" Ms Tucker said.
