** Articles for this newsletter **

If you have a web site or web page dealing with Papua New Guinea (PNG) and would like to have it mentioned here then please send an email to -- PNGNews[@]pnggossip.com. If you are looking for web sites about PNG then you can try a search at -- http://www.michie.net/pnginfo/pnglinks.html. This link allows you to add your own PNG related site, and also lets you search for keywords of other sites about PNG. The PNG Business Directory, located at -- http://www.pngbd.com -- is an excellent site and it has forums, exchange rates - in fact it has so much information the only way anyone can get a full understanding of what is available is to visit the site. I highly recommend this site.

For readers who are not familiar with the geography of PNG I suggest going to this page for a quick start to a link to a map of Port Moresby -- http://www.michie.net/pnginfo/pom-map.html -- and then continue on by taking a look at -- http://maps.expedia.com -- and clicking on the "find a map option".

To send messages for the PNG Gossip Newsletter please send to -- PNGNews-queue[@]pnggossip.com.

This electronic newsletter is sent via e-mail at no charge. I expect to be able to write one new issue fortnightly, however, life sometimes interferes, and the need to earn a living may create a delay.

====================

** Jeepneys **

It has been over a year since the idea of Jeepneys has been talked about as being a new means of transport for PNG. The concept may be a good idea but it would seem that setting it into practice is a great deal harder than convincing the transport department of the idea.

====================

** Divine Word **

Two more schools are preparing to affiliate with the Catholic run Divine Word University in Madang. The two institutes, St Mary's School of Nursing at Vunapope and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Teachers College (Kabaleo) are located in East New Britain. Both institutes have been negotiating for more than ten years with the university over that time the institutes have had their programs and structures studied by the University. Divine Word has also conducted an academic audit of each institution. -- http://www.dwu.ac.pg

====================

** Mt Hagen / Western Highlands **

A pair of shoes caused a fight to erupt between tribes from two provinces in the highlands earlier this week. It has been reported that 17 people have been axed and three houses have been damaged in the fight between people from the Eastern Highlands province and Western Highlands. It has been reported that people from other highlands provinces have sided with the Eastern Highlanders and that they had demanded the Western highlanders pay compensation over what they have claimed to be "continuous attacks on innocent highlanders living in Mt Hagen". The clash began over a new pair of shoes that it has been alleged a Western Highlander decided he wanted to have more than the Eastern Highlander who was wearing them.

====================

** Goroka / Eastern Highlands **

The town of Goroka was in chaos previously this week but calm has been restored. Many highlanders from other highland provinces fled the town earlier this week after Eastern highlanders went on a rampage in retaliation over the attack in the Western highlands. It was also claimed that leaders from the Eastern Highlands Province had shut the part of the highlands highway that passes through their province but police denied that rumour. There have also been threats to force the closure of the Yonki power station in the province that provides power to the other highland provinces. Police have advised that it is safe to travel along the highlands highway.

====================

** Kainantu Gold Mine **

The Bilimoia landowner group, owners of the Kainantu gold mine in the Eastern Highlands province, have threatened to close the mine unless the mine operator honours its obligations given in an agreement to them. The commitments include awarding contracts to the landowner group. The landowners also want the mine operator to honour verbal commitments that have been given in the past these included the provision of K10,000 capital for 10 landowner clans.

====================

** Garden City **

Garden City shopping and accommodation complex in Boroko had its fair share of water woes recently when Eda Ranu decided to contaminate the water with diesel. The manager was seen running around with chlorine and fire hoses attempting to flush out the tanks. He was also seen attempting to pressurise the water pumping system with little more than a toy car tyre pump. Never one to keep tenants in the dark David had one of his "newsletters" out and circulating almost as soon as Eda Ranu did the dirty deed followed closely by another update to assure tenants the water was safe even if it did smell of chlorine. Having dealt with other property managers it is a pleasure to find someone that cares about their tenants.

I believe that property manager of Garden City has also had the go ahead to vastly improve the building. Ray White Real Estate manages Garden City.

====================

** Malaria **

A new Malaria carrying mosquito has been found in a village called Oveng in southern Cameroon near the borders of Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. It joins four other known species. This species has been dubbed Oveng Form after the village it was found. Mosquitoes from the Anopheles group kill roughly 3,000 people per day in the world. The new mosquito is similar to others in that it carries Plasmodium falciparum except that it does not appear to be found inside houses as much as the other malaria carrying mosquitoes.

====================

** Malaria Drugs **

The World health Organisation has said that there will be a worldwide shortage of the major drug used to treat malaria. Artemther-lumefantrine produced from the Artemisia annua plant takes a minimum of six months to cultivate and then another three to five months to extract and process into a useful drug. There has been a recent surge in demand for the drug creating the shortage of the drug.

====================

** Loggers **

It has been claimed that loggers are using fake PNG documents in an attempt to export illegally logged timber from Indonesia's Papua Province. Indonesian police have apprehended a foreign registered ship carrying illegal logs in a district next to the NG border. It is claimed that around 200,000 cubic metres of illegal Indonesian logs have been shipped to China and India through the southern part of the Philippines using the fake PNG papers.

====================

** Undisciplined Defence Force **

The good efforts of about 120 PNG soldiers on a military exercise in Townsville, Australia has been severely tarnished by at least four soldiers who have been ordered back home after fighting in an Australian Army Infantry Mess last week. The fight left mess facilities damaged and caused Australian soldiers to vacate the mess disgusted. A full investigation is underway by high-level defence force personal.

It has also been reported that two PNG soldiers that recently caused a commotion at the Duntroon Military College in Canberra, Australia will most likely be terminated from the force.

====================

** Undisciplined Police Force **

Not to be out done by the Defence Force the police force put on its own undisciplined display at a store not much more than 100 metres from the Boroko Police Station. Police, possibly intoxicated, assaulted the owner and son of the Boroko Trophy Haus store. Witnesses could only watch as one of the policemen fired four shots from an M16 rifle at the feet of the owner and son. A photographer from The National newspaper also had his digital camera confiscated. The owner has lodged a complaint with the Boroko police station.

====================

** City Hall **

The Manger of the National Capital District Commission has upset the Governor General by not attending a meeting. The city manager is the first person to break the new Governor General's attempt to upgrade etiquette and decorum at Government House. Since Sir Paulias Matane took office earlier this year a marked improvement has been noted in the etiquette of Government House something that has been allowed to slip over the years.

====================

** Tourism **

Erigere Singin has been quietly removed from the second top position at the Tourism Promotion Authority (TPA) in Port Moresby. No reason has been given for her removal. Peter Vincent, the Tourism boss, has said that tourism figures for PNG are up by 5 percent when compared with the numbers for 2002. The PNG government has allocated an extra K2 million to the TPA from the country's budget for 2005. -- http://www.pngtourism.org.pg

====================

** Moresby Arts Theatre **

The Moresby Arts Theatre is celebrating its 90th birthday with free entertainment including short films, dances, drama, etc. They began on 31st November 1914 at the Library Institute hall in Douglas Street, downtown Port Moresby and was opened by the Lieutenant Governor. For those who know modern day Port Moresby the Deloitte Tower is the modern day occupier of the original Library Institute site. The modern day Library Institute is still standing next to the Deloitte Tower. The Moresby Arts Theatre is now located at Waigani.

====================

** Manus **

The highway that serves all of the villages on the main Manus Island is being repaired thanks to the efforts of the World Bank. The road has been allowed to deteriorate over a period of five to ten years. The poor condition of the road has caused an inconvenience for all travellers on the main island. The World Bank in conjunction with the Manus Provincial Government aims to upgrade the four main sections of the highway using gravel to help minimise soil erosion.

====================

** Fishing Resort **

PNG has a new fishing resort located on the south coast of the main island of New Britain. The name of the resort is Lindenhafen and it is on the Solomon Sea -- http://www.anglingadventures.com.au/lindenhafen.html -- Lindenhafen is also a great place to take the family on a relaxing holiday and is sure to become popular in the PNG tourism industry
