A State Government export grant is helping the Cairns Slipways make its mark in the superyacht industry.

State Development & Innovation, Tony McGrady

Minister for State Development and Innovation Tony McGrady said a $50,000 grant under the Export Manager Program was helping the Slipways to reach an international market.

"The money will help pay for an export manager for two years. This person will research overseas markets, find overseas agents, give advice on the best way to package products and services, and develop an export plan.

"The Cairns Slipways is a huge success story. The company was responsible for the formation of The Super Yacht Group - Great Barrier Reef which has now become one of the most successful industry clusters in the State.

"Thanks to the Slipways, Cairns is attracting more superyachts than any other destination in Australia including Sydney Harbour," Mr McGrady said.

"It's becoming a leading superyacht repair and maintenance facility and as a result bringing tens of millions of dollars into the Cairns economy and creating quality jobs.

"A record 24 superyachts sailed in Trinity Inlet last year, injecting $30 million into the local economy, and the same is expected this year.

"This is a fantastic effort and one that I'm sure is appreciated by the local business community."

Mr McGrady said the company now employed 120 people directly and created business opportunities for a range of businesses including paint and fuel suppliers, upholstery and engineering companies.

"If you're cruising the Pacific in a superyacht and need to find a safe port of call to rest and refurbish your vessel, why wouldn't you pick Cairns?

"It's excellent slipway facilities are complemented by an outstanding natural environment which includes the Great Barrier Reef and World Heritage Listed tropical rainforest."

Mr McGrady said as winner of the 2004 Cairns region Exporter of Year Award, Cairns Slipways was a great role model for other businesses aiming for success.
