(QldGovSpin) FNQ Clubs join forces to give kids a hand
Minister for Communities, Disability Services and Seniors Warren Pitt has congratulated Far North Queensland sporting and social clubs for a project aiming to raise thousands of dollars for children who are seriously ill or have a physical disability.

Mr Pitt praised the organisations for their caring attitude when he joined club representatives in Cairns today to launch this year's Clubs Smile for a Child campaign for Far North Queensland.

RSL, leagues, sports and community clubs would sell fundraising items, as well as organise fundraising events, up until November this year.

The money raised in Far North Queensland would stay in the region for the benefit of local children who have already been identified as needing help.

"Clubs Smile for a Child is a fundraising and public awareness campaign run by Clubs Queensland to raise money for two organisations, the Starlight Children's Foundation and Montrose Access," Mr Pitt said.

"Funds raised will enable Starlight to put a smile on the face of a child with a serious illness or allow Montrose Access to give therapy and support to children with a physical disability.

"I am delighted so many clubs in my own region are prepared to lend a hand and make a real difference to the lives of these children and their families."

Local clubs taking part include Atherton, Mareeba and Cairns RSLs, Tigers Leagues and Mareeba Leagues Clubs, Cairns Bowls Club, Cairns District Junior Leagues and Brothers Leagues Clubs.

The clubs can sell 'wobblers' (paper faces which turn from a frown into a smile) and smiley pens, or hold fundraising events during the campaign. One of the first events planned is a golf day at Cairns Golf Club in September.
