The State Government will host a series of free workshops in Cairns this month on two different issues in the sport and recreation industry.

Deputy Premier, Treasurer & Sport, Terry Mackenroth

The Deputy Premier and Minister for Sport, Mr Terry Mackenroth, said the community workshops would focus on risk management and club governance.

"The risk management workshop will help organisations understand the importance of developing a risk management plan," Mr Mackenroth said.

"It will outline what risk management is, the benefits of risk management and how to implement such a process in sport organisations.

"The club governance workshops will cover many areas, strategic management, legal compliance and ethics and financial monitoring."

Mr Mackenroth said the Building Active Communities workshops were one of many ways the Beattie Government, through Sport and Recreation Queensland, was working directly with communities to address current trends and issues facing the sport and recreation industry.

"Having a better skilled workforce and support base, particularly at the grass roots level is vital in getting more Queenslanders active," he said.

"So whether you are a coach, official, teacher, parent, club administrator or player, I encourage everyone to come along and attend one or all of these workshops and access quality information and training."

The Cairns Building Active Communities Workshop series will be held at the Brothers Leagues Club, 99 - 105 Anderson Street, Cairns on:

* Tuesday, August 24 (6pm - 9pm) - Risk management

* Monday, August 30 (6pm - 9pm) - Club governance Part A

* Tuesday, August 31 (6pm - 9pm) - Club governance Part B

To reserve your place at the workshops contact Sport and Recreation Queensland on (07) 4039 8299.

Admission to the workshops is free.
