The Beattie Government is encouraging young Queenslanders to apply for grants totalling $70,000 to enable participation in National Youth Week 2005, Minister for Communities, Disability Services and Seniors Warren Pitt said today.

Communities & Disability Services, Warren Pitt

Mr Pitt said National Youth Week, which will run from April 9 to 17 next year, was a joint Australian, State and local government initiative which has grown in popularity over the past few years.

"Grants of up to $1,500 are available to assist young Queenslanders aged 12 to 25 to develop, stage and foster participation in National Youth Week activities across the State," Mr Pitt said.

"National Youth Week provides an opportunity for young people, and the broader community, to celebrate and recognise the value of young Queenslanders to their local communities."

The event now involves more than 1 million young Australians from every state and territory taking part in National Youth Week events and activities.

"A key priority of the Queensland Government's Youth Participation Strategy is the inclusion of young people in the social, cultural and economic life of their communities," Mr Pitt said.

"National Youth Week grants support this goal and I encourage young Queenslanders to apply for a National Youth Week grant and to get involved in this exciting event."

Applications for funding close on November 8.
