(QldGovSpin) Palm Island police will not be out of pocket: Spence
The Minister for Police and Corrective Services, Judy Spence, has assured police who lost personal belongings in last Friday's riot at Palm Island that they will not be left out of pocket.
Police & Corrective Services, Judy Spence
"The Queensland Police Service is ready and willing to cover the loss of officers' property and associated costs, such as emergency accommodation for those who were evacuated," Ms Spence said.
"I understand some officers were not insured or their insurance companies may not accept claims for property that was damaged or stolen.
"The Commissioner and I will make sure that no officer is left out of pocket - although we appreciate money can never truly compensate for the loss of personal mementos.
"The Government also supports the Queensland Police Union of Employees in launching a public appeal today.
"Many members of the community want to show their appreciation for the work of police and the union is providing an avenue for them to do that.
"The Police Service will take into consideration any money officers receive through insurance or the union's appeal, and is ready to meet the shortfall."
Ms Spence said the Police Service does not yet have an estimated figure on the total loss to individuals.
