Premier Peter Beattie today congratulated Wacol steel water pipe manufacturer Tyco Water on securing a $50 million contract with Abu Dhabi company PAL Technology.

Premier & Trade, Peter Beattie

"This is Tyco Water's first major export contract in the Middle East and was won against vigorous competition from global manufacturers," Mr Beattie said.

"It involves the manufacture of 2,500 steel water pipes, worth $10 million, and includes the company's patented SINTAJOINT steel water pipeline system, all manufactured at the company's Wacol plant which was established in 1982.

"The pipes will transport megalitres of water daily from the capital Abu Dhabi to the eastern regions of the country.

"This latest multi-million dollar contract win for Tyco Water is great news for the company as well as for local jobs at Wacol.

"We know from studies by the Industrial Supplies Office that for every $1 million spent on manufacturing, more than twice that value is injected back into the local economy, so this contract is a classic win-win situation.

"It clearly demonstrates the significant contribution of smart manufacturers such as Tyco Water to Queensland's sustained economic growth.

"Tyco Water recently clinched the contract for a $3 million irrigation project with Marlborough District Council in New Zealand and a $2 million contract for its NEWater reuse system with the Public Utilities Board in Singapore.

"Tyco has a long and proud history as a key participant in Queensland's major water pipeline infrastructure in manufacture and supply as well as design, project management and construction.

"This company has operated for more than a century and has supplied the pipelines for the water supplies to all major power stations in Queensland.

Tyco Water's marketing manager David Brady said: "We are a diversified company that provides vital products and services to customers around the world.

"Our latest contract wins further prove the technical advantages and world competitiveness of Tyco Water's innovative water pipeline technology."
