Mrs Keech told more than 550 delegates to the National Franchise Council of Australia conference Australia had the highest concentration of franchise systems per head of population in the world.

"Within Australia, Queensland has the highest concentration of franchise system head offices and franchise outlets per head of population of any state," she said.

"There are about 850 franchise systems in Australia - more than half of them operating in Queensland through more than 7000 units.

"Australia-wide, there are about 54,000 franchise businesses employing nearly 500,000 people.

"In addition, there are more than 10,000 retail fuel and motor vehicle retail outlets employing an estimated 85,000 people."

Mrs Keech said the Beattie Government, through the Department of State Development, was proud to be a conference sponsor.

"The Queensland Government has taken an active role in the development of the franchise industry in this state," she said.

"We consulted closely with the National Franchise Council and the Queensland Small Business Advisory Council in the development and implementation of our Franchising Strategy, which is an Australian first.

"The strategy includes a project to help franchisors enter overseas markets.

"I should also point out to you that the Queensland Government welcomes investors from all over the world and we will do our utmost to help anyone who finds an investment opportunity here to establish operations."

Mrs Keech said the conference this year welcomed for the first time international visitors from the United States, United Kingdom, India, China, Taiwan, Singapore and New Zealand.

"I particularly welcome international delegates to this year's proceedings and, wearing both my hats - as Queensland's Minister for Tourism and as a local member of State Parliament - I'm delighted that you have the chance to discover the delights of this world-class tourist venue," she said.

"The Gold Coast is one of Australia's most popular tourism and business destinations.

"I hope you have taken time to experience the Gold Coast while you are here, or you find time to sample our magnificent tourism product before you return home.

"There's something for everyone - some of the best beaches in the world, theme parks, ecotourism and adventure, ancient rainforest and our unique Hinterland, fine food and fine wine."
