Queenslanders called on to celebrate historic day

The Acting Premier, Mr Terry Mackenroth, called on Queenslanders to take time out today to celebrate Queensland Day.

Mr Mackenroth said he believed Queensland Day, which falls on June 6 every year, was a great opportunity to celebrate and remember what a wonderful State we all live in.

"As a proud Queenslander, today will holds a special meaning for me, as it will for countless other Queenslanders," Mr Mackenroth said.

"Queensland Day will be incorporated into a week of celebrations, and simply asks us to acknowledge our colourful history and development, our diverse people and our marvellous achievements.

"We can celebrate our unique lifestyle and character, our beautiful climate and landscape, our natural wonders, our multiculturalism, our iconic attractions, our relatively low cost of living and our warm hospitality."

Mr Mackenroth said an ideal way of celebrating the occasion, whether on the Gold Coast or on the northern tip of Cape York, was spending time with loved ones at an enjoyable setting such as in a park, on a beach or simply a backyard barbeque or dinner.

He said officially, Queensland Day marked the birth of Queensland as a self-governing colony.

"It is the anniversary of the day on which Queens Victoria signed documents granting Queensland the right to its own representative government and appointing Queensland's first Governor, Sir George Bowen," Mr Mackenroth said.

"Queenslanders can acknowledge this historic day by giving thanks to the birth of our democracy in this great State.

"It's great to be a Queenslander!"
