Goldman award winners to donate prize money
Bhopal, May 25. (PTI): Winners of the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize, Rashida Bee and Champadevi Shukla, today announced their decision to donate the entire award money of Rs 56 lakhs to a charitable trust for the welfare of the 1984 Bhopal gas disaster victims.

Medical assistance to children of gas exposed parents with congenital malformation and setting up income generating projects for women survivors would be among the priorities of the trust, to be run by an all-women board, the two leaders of Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Stationery Karmachari Sangh, told reporters here.

Once the proposed trust is set up, the prize money would be directly transferred to it from the Goldman Environmental Foundation, they said.

On the recent statement by the Madhya Pradesh Minister for Gas Relief Babulal Gaur, regarding a CID probe, Rashida Bee and Shukla said their organisation, their work among the survivors and their eligibility for the prize is open to public scrutiny at any time.

The two were presented the award, considered equivalent to Nobel prize, at San Francisco on April 19.

Shukla, Union Secretary, said during their visit to the US they were offered support by front ranking members of the Democratic Party and some of the most powerful trade unions in the US.

Earlier last week, the State Government had ordered a probe against Rashida Bee and Shukla following complaints of irregularities and false claims to get foreign aid.
