Attention ALL

Members of the MAD group (Minnippi Against Development) will be holding a Public Awareness Campaign in King George Square in Brisbane's CBD on Tuesday 16 November 2004 from 12 noon to 2 pm.

Womans Day

For immediate release

13 November 2004

Brisbane City Council has signed a contract with BMD constructions to develop 13 Ha of West Minnippi Parklands for housing and with the profits build a 18 hole Resort Style Golf Course on the Acid Sulphate Soil flood plain of Bulimba Creek before any Town Planning approvals were applied for or even granted. Indeed before any Planning and Environment Court Decision appeal is applied for by the many community groups which oppose this development.

Our Group has a booked the space and will be gathering in King George Square in front City Hall on the Adelaide Street side with our signs and placards.

We will have our Petition, letters of Concern/Objection and Christmas Cards ready for signing by passing pedestrians.

We intend to present some of these to the Lord Mayor, and Deputy Mayor before Council Meeting starts at 2.00 pm.

This area is home to the most dense known colony of Squirrel Glider Possums anywhere. Yet, the developers intend to construct three of the fairways in the old growth area which contains many habitat hollows. Bush Fires over several days burnt most of East Minnippi just a few weeks ago and many old hollow trees burnt down. We cannot afford to lose anymore old trees with hollows.

We are extremely concerned with the introduction of any cats and dogs into this environmental sensitive area. Fences are not the answer for domestic pets as they will become barriers for the gliders as they glide from one tree to the next. The Brisbane City Council has acknowledged that there is no Local Laws which could prohibit cats or dogs within any housing development site anywhere in Brisbane.

Come to our campaign launch if you can. If not log on to our web site/s and download the letters, petition and Christmas Cards and send then into the Government Ministers and BCC Councillors.
