World Environment Day: Nation rallying for Tasmania's forests and wildlife

'Federal election litmus test' - Brown

On World Environment Day 2004, Greens Senator Bob Brown has called on Australia's 15 million voters to make saving Tasmania's forests and wildlife a vote changing issue in the impending election.

There are rallies, concerts and other events around the nation this weekend for the iconic forests.

"As of today, a vote for either Labor or Liberal, either Latham or Howard, is a vote for the chainsaws," Senator Brown said.

"These grand rainforests and tall eucalypt forests should have federal nomination for World Heritage status. Instead, John Howard has signed their death warrant, the Tasmanian Regional Forest Agreement, and Mark Latham agrees!

"This issue may be more potent in moving votes than saving the Franklin River in 1983 or the Daintree rainforests in 1987," Senator Brown said in Hobart in front of signs calling for a royal commission into the Tasmanian woodchip industry's practices.
