"Our elected representatives in Canberra seem obsessed with the full privatisation and sale of the remaining 50.1% of taxpayer-owned communications giant Telstra, against the expressed wishes of a majority of Australians," said Selwyn Johnston, Independent Senate Candidate for Queensland, in Innisfail today.

"Over the past 20 years successive federal governments have presided over the acquisitions of an estimated 80% plus of taxpayer-owned assets, by foreign corporations."

"Prime Minister Howard alleges that Australia's 'mum-and-dad investors' will acquire the bulk of shares in the proposed T3 sale via stock markets. This is simply not correct! Once shares are available on world stock markets, any individual or corporation, regardless of nationality, can legally trade in them," continued Selwyn Johnston.

"Opposition leader Mark Latham has stated quite emphatically that Labor will not sell Telstra, but how is that possible when he provided bipartisan support to the Coalition by agreeing to the US/Australia Free Trade Agreement!"

"Both Howard and Latham know perfectly well that all public opinion polls have shown Australians do not want any more sales of taxpayer-owned assets, especially Telstra. The problem is that governments simply don't listen to the taxpayer!"

"But who is to blame, the Government, or the people who elected them?" concluded the Independent Senate Candidate for Queensland, Selwyn Johnston.
