Today's launch of the Lion Garden Youth Housing Project in the heart of Melbourne's Chinatown is the culmination of a long standing co-operative approach between governments, community groups and philanthropic organisations.

The Lion Garden was made possible by contributions from the Victorian Department of Human Services, the Sydney Myer Centenary Fund, the Lions Club, Gospel Hall, Urban Seed, Melbourne Citymission, the City of Melbourne and Melbourne Affordable Housing.

Cr. David Risstrom, Chairperson of Melbourne Affordable Housing, Melbourne City Councillor and Victorian Greens No. 1 Senate Candidate lauded the establishment of the Lion Garden as a "solid step forward for young people and a heartening sign that our community is willing to care for and invest in the future of their youth."

Lion Garden provides eight self-contained studio apartments for young residents providing accommodation for up to three years and access to support services such as education, healthcare and personal support under an innovative Youth Transitions support model.

"Lion Garden is a great example of government and the community doing things for some of the most vulnerable people in our society. It is fantastic to see the culmination of many years work finally celebrated in the official launch this morning.

"On behalf of the board, staff and supporters of Melbourne Affordable Housing and the other organisations involved, I would like to thank everyone for their generosity and foresight in contributing to the project's success", Cr. Risstrom said.
