Action proposed for Australia's Invasion Day on 26 January

Benny Zable's Invasion Day PosterI am preparing an action for Invasion Day at Parliament House.

I have prepared this poster with the Nimbin Environment Centre, which is being worked on by a graphic artist at the moment to give it more prominence.

With Peter Garrett selling us out and the Howard Government's Nuclear Australian dream, I think its time to bring it to public on this day when we converge at the Aboriginal Tent Embassy.

Little Johnny Howard appears on stage outside the Parliament giving out Australian of the year certificates. Last year we got close enough to the stage for him to see us.

Please download, print poster and send around: JPG 372x520 31.2kb or PDF 73.4kb

Hmm

Hmm, I am a white Australian. I enjoy living and working in Australia - I am a fortunate person.
I like the idea of Australian 'values': mateship, fair-go, etc. I wonder though, how many of us really uphold these values? How many of us, black or white are quick to judge others negatively. So many of us appear to lack compassion.
For me, the 26th of January is Australia Day, given that I would not be here (a comfy, middle class existence!) without the arrival of the First Fleet. But I am also acutely aware of the disposession this arrival created for the indigenous people who had been on this land for many thousands of years. Certainly, 'invasion' or posession of the land would have been likely by others if the British had not arrived, however this does not make it right, it was still something taken without consent. What occurred was probably an indication of the mentality of the time - whites considered themselves and their way of life superior, the blacks were considered backward and, by some, barbaric.
Today, I guess I look to the future. There is much anger in the media currently directed toward wayward Aboriginal youths, and Aboriginal crime in general. I think this is a result of built up anger and agression (from the past injustices perhaps), lack of strong role models in some comunities and reduction in strong cultural ties to land (combination of whitefella legislation and black confusion?). I do think that ideally we can say "hey, it's been crap, we have been unjust and unfair, let's move on, ;et's work out how we can do this fairly and together" But it's going to take strong people- black and white. It's going to need to be about recognising the past but also building resislience for the kids of the present - the adults of the future. I'm not sure how we do this, but as a teacher of literacy (to both indigenous and non indig kids) I hope that I am making a small contribution toward a more accepting future which embodies the idea of a 'fair go'(for all).

Australia Day

I am saddened to see so many people look at this day so wrong, this is a day to truly celebrate as it was the day my forefathers brought the world to the door step of this country that sat in isolation for thousands of years, if not more.

Modern day discoveries of their time and the chance for Australia to catch up and become part of the rest of the planet.

Because surely this was going to happen one day or another.

Be thankful is wasn't the Spanish or Napoleon or even for that matter Hitler, just to name a few.

In reality it could have been anybody else! Now you might say invasion and there is protest that we are here, but I see no-one saying no to the money, medicine, housing and the land grabbing. Be thankful the majority of Australians see us as all Australians sharing one great country stand up and be proud celebrate this wonderful day.

I KNOW I WILL WITH MY FELLOW AUSTRALIANS AND I AM DAM PROUD!

I am far from proud

Do your "fellow Australians" include Indigenous people? Do you envisage Indigenous Australians being able to celebrate the invasion and dispossession of their land, the massacres perpetrated on their people, the programmes of cultural eugenics that tried to eliminate them from the planet, and the continuing social, economic, health, legal, education, housing, etc. disadvantages they must endure?

The Indigenous people of this country are the only true Australians.

My thoughts, compassion and solidarity are with Indigenous people on this day and every day that I walk with my white feet on their land.

Step up

At one point in time in 100 years or 10,000 years the Aboriginal people of the community that feel dispossesed are going to have to step and take a positive role. There is only such much the non Aboriginal people of the country can do before the responsibility has to be taken by the vocal minority to start positive change.

Step up or shut up.

PS: Iam of Aboriginal descent - having lived in Alice Springs for 27 years.

To far from proud

Who rattled your cage? if you dont like Austalia and all of its people ,black, white, purple ,pink, yellow or what ever get the f#ck out loser, this is one country we all should be treated the same.

The world over people for centuries people have been entering the countries of others and it still happens today, unite we all have red blood pretty dam common isnt it.

just so you know i dont see A

just so you know i dont see Australia as a day to get drunk as i personally have never touched Alcohol and never plan to.

if i a typical white australian how come some of my beliefs come from ideas presented to people by some of the Aboriginal community. My cousin was bashed by a group of Aboriginals. she was walking along the beach with a friend. she was lucky her brother and some guys were walking along behind cuz these Aboriginals jumped out started bashing her yelling White trash, death to white trash. this is out beach we are aboriginals it our heritage.

One of my Ex girlfriends lives in a western part of NSW and refuses to go into her local town centre. i remember when dating her getting a call that she was being chased. a group of Aboriginals were chasing her screaming we gunna rape u white bi&^* you will feel our c#@$# and realise we beter then white people. I realise they dont represent the whole community but thats what has happened fo 2 people i know then i think of how many people i DONT KNOW.
parts of Sydney and Dubbo which are majority owned by Aboriginals have massive crime rates and Police scared to enter, Aboriginals start a riot in sydney and the police stand and watch because they not allowed to break it up.

Now i not saying all Aboriginals are like that but the Aboriginals who are are what is causing the problems. I know their is a few Aboriginals who are getting jobs, building their lives and doing their best.

As for muslims they got nothing to do with Aboriginal rites. No i dont believe all muslims are Terrorists but then a girl in my school muslim really nice girl when september 11 happened the next day she went up to another girl from my school who had lost a family member in the attacks and said you deserved to have her die. Muslims will rule the world. then when the girl said get away u muslim terrorist the girl got suspended and a public apology made in a whole school assembly and nothing mentioned bout the comments starting it.

My grandma used to give the aboriginals food when they asked, she would invite them in for tea. she had friends amunst the Aboriginal community she never used them.

I know aboriginals were going fine before fridges etc but was it better?? im sure it was in some ways but if you going to complain about it feel free to chuck it all in. go back completely to nature.

We had an Aboriginal activist come to our school saying all Aboriginal rights and how bad white people are etc etc. but wheen asked why high percentage of Aboriginals have criminal records his reply is they not bad people it just the alcohol he said Aboriginals cant handle the alcohol. their systems dont know how to processes it. of which a student asked so if they know it so bad, messing them up, making them do things wrong etc why do they keep drinking it to which the aboriginal activist just gave no comment tried to change subject and left room.

If you aboriginal which i guess you are by wat u said. makes me difference to me in how i look at you,how i talk to you, You have aboriginal ancestors, i have scotish ancestors my ancestors dont do anything for me. they in the grave they dont shape how i am or what i do. One of my ancestors were great men in Scotland and their castles over their my ancestors used to live in but i dont walk round like i special. i dont go to scotland and expect them to worship me or treat me special cuz of my ancestors. if i moved to scotland i expect they would treat me just like any other person.

Aboriginals i treat just like any other person i respect them, i would be friends with them i have nothing against them as a race i respect the Aboriginal beliefs but i just feel the activists and ones pushing for equal rights are going to far.

In Australia most Aussies it has been accepted shorten words and it a australian thing. Like Australians are called Aussies, Barbeque is called a Barbie, English are called POMS. English call us Convicts, we dont get offended by this. But when a name that has been round for generations and it only an abbreviation and their is no offence in it no meaning of disrespect so why when ABOriginals get called Abo's why do they get all offended. it not meant in offence. Please answer that i not asking you out of disrespect i just wondering because the Word Abo i thought came from fact it the first 3 letters of Aboriginal. and being aussies etc we just shortened it.

Please understand i dont take drugs i never touched it. and never touched alcohol this is because i seen what it has done to people so i decided not to let it do same to me. I respect Aboriginals it just i apply for jobs and cant get them because i not aboriginal and they jobs i would like in computers or engineering everything. Schools offer FREE tuition to Aboriginals and dont even let rest of the community pay to go to the same tuition.

i wish i was blind wish i couldnt see what is happening around me but unfortunitly it not me who is blind but those who pushing through government policys giving special treatment to Aboriginals who are blind. I have a lot of Political opinions i follow politics closely i read the Parliment House pages about proposed legislation etc i listen to th debates on the ABC. I have done research on politics and political party's histories.

anyway enough of my windbagen

get over it grow up stop your

get over it grow up stop your whingeing i feel sorry for the stolen generation but it happened nothing can change that and unfortunitly it still happening but to children of every race and religeon. as for invasion day WAKE UP i feel sorry for you but come on every country had people come. If you dont like what we have done for you go live out in bush. throw away your clothes, throw out ur fridge all your food, dont go to macdonalds throw out ur car dont go to doctors because that was all brought by the dreaded white man, i am so sick and tired of aboriginals. i not racist i dont judge people for colour of their skin (though these days you cant tell) besides i remember learning about something that been hidden by aboriginals, the fact is the aboriginals are not the original owners of australia. they came down from the islands north of Australia they invaded and killed the natives that were already here. their have been small burial sites in Australia that were not aboriginal. So technically the Aboriginals invaded Australia then now upset that someone else came here. I have an Aboriginal friend he was stolen off his parents and you know what his attitude is?? he wants EQUAL rights. he dont want more rights he wants equal he said why give Aboriginals free tutoring because they aboriginal their is descimination where people dont see aboriginals as anything then their the descimination where people go oh the poor aboriginals they dont know how to make money, they need extra help the poor people. he said most people dont want that either. he went for a job that was for helping the Aboriginals in the area, helping them with their rights etc. at interview when asked what first thing he would ask for if employed he asked for Charles Perkins to have his mouth shut. needless to say he didnt get the job. he said best thing done was being stolen off his parents cuz he had recently gone back and found his parents and they were alcoholics with criminal record a mile long. The original aboriginals the full blood aboriginals were nice people. i respect them. my grandma often talked about the old Aborigials the gentle people. but now their the people with one drop iff that of aboriginal blood in them crying for more rights, wanting the rights to places they sold and abandoned. Eg Bennalong point in sydney. they claim and aboriginal was buried their well rightly so and true. The Aboriginal Benalong was friendly with the Brittish. he was the first Aboriginal to go to England and meet the Queen. He was highly respected but he was rejected by the Aboriginal people. they excommunicated him and if he ever tried go back they would of murdered him. He was buried a reject. Years later the Opera House is built on Bennalong point and suddenly the cries goes out that is our land a famous Aboriginal was buried their. They not interested in fact Aboriginal their all they interested in is the publicity. I will never respect Aboriginals as long as their people out their going over board. If a person says they scottish i believe them if they say they african i believe them but i dont care it interesting but no more then that cuz they same as me. Aboriginals like to mouth out that they are. they have to prove they Aboriginal and they want special treatment. to me someone says they Aboriginal i dont care it dont make any difference to me because to me they the same as me another human being but it annoys me when they get more privalages. they scream racisim at moments notice but look in paper amount of jobs for Aboriginals only now that is racisim though government dont see it cuz Aboriginals minority but Racism is racism whether it against a majority or minority.
I hope John Howard never apologises for the stolen generation why should he. You apologise for something YOU done wrong. John Howard had nothing to do with stolen generation so why should he apologise.
If you want equal rights u can have them that means no more extra money from centrelink, no extra payments, no special discount cards, no free tuitian for your kids. if you want to be equal then be equal be the same dont go begging for special help because you Aboriginal all people i know dont give a crap if you Aboriginal or not. treat u same whether u are or not. we only get cranky when we try do something and cant cuz we NOT Aboriginal.
Do not call it Invasion day. it not so much a celebration of the English landing as it is more a celebration of being Australian of the mateship of the fair go, of all the special things it means to be Australian whether it be the diggers, Albert Namajera, it a time to remember Australias past our history your history for those who came here recently for them to learn bout Australian and Aboriginal culture. Aboriginal culture is important to remember and to respect. but dont call it invasion day. Call it what it is AUSTRALIA DAY. stand tall stand proud remember you are Australian you are Aboriginal Australians..
grow up get over yourselves for the benefit of the Aboriginal people and the benefit of the rest of australia

unfinished answer for no worthy white fella

this is typically the answer of a white guy that sees in australia day another occasion to go and get drunk so called celebrating
you should be ashamed of what you just write

i tell you one thing if aborigenes behave like that it because the whites had no mercy and brought all their awfull diseases with them
you re just trying to be blind cause your generation is a blind generation that doesn't want to have any political opinion i bet you think also all arabs and muslims are terrrorist

makes me want to cry first when i reaD YOUR MAIL THEN MAKES ME WANNA
break your neck

and what about your grand mother another colonialist relaxing at tea time

that s sad you should be silent during austraLIA day

you can t wipe 400 years of history like that

so your message is really long it says a lot of things
lot s of things that needs to be critisised

you re talkin about fridge electricity and stuff but before your ancestor arrives aborigenes were living perfectly according to the nature rules this world were living in is really hard to escape you cant go and live in the bush like that

i can t beleve that as an australian you saying such things shame on you and your grandmother at least the way you re using her in your
terrible declaration

good hang over for australia day
