1) Civil war in Iraq: we continue to support the resistance

We speak plain language: the Sunni-Shiite conflict in Iraq has grown in the course of the last six months into a sort of civil war.

It helps little, to simply argue against this position by pointing out that all this has been caused by the machinations of the USA and of Zionism - as many of our friends in the resistance like to do. Surely the USA contributed substantially to this split, without however carrying this on their banner from the outset. For the civil war does not indicate by any means the success of Washington, but its total fiasco, its complete loss of control of the situation.

The neocons believed they would be able to sweep away all political obstacles with armed power. At first they dreamed they would be able to establish by means of their direct political agents Chalabi and Allawi a loyal puppet regime similar to those with which the U.S. rule half the world. But this failed thoroughly. Not only did the raw wind of the resistance--especially that carried out by the Sunni part of the population--strike them. But what happened with the regime that the U.S. itself put in power was exactly that which the old US power elites had warned about -- it fell under the control of per-Iranian forces, for which the US occupation represents only the lesser evil in relation to the Saddam regime and which under changed circumstances can easily turn against the USA.

But this situation also changes at least provisionally the perspective of establishing a national resistance front that would include a significant part of the Shiite political spectrum. The greatest disappointment thereby is with the movement of the impoverished Shiite masses under the guidance of Muqtada al-Sadr. Not only we, but even parts of the resistance had not until the last period given up hope that he would link up with them. Actually there were promising indications this could happen. Besides having made calls on the USA to unconditionally leave Iraq, there were the rebellions 2004, the solidarity with besieged Falluja then, as well as the refusal to support the divisive Constitution of 2005 with a vehement position taken against the division of the country.

As we have from the outset, we stand now on the side of the resistance, and thus against the Maliki government and its ally Muqtada. In this situation one can only show strength and continue the struggle. If the basic conditions and the international constellation should change, the resistance may try again to reach out its hand. Perhaps then it will be accepted.

2) Int'l Conference for the resistance, a just peace in the Mideast convened Italy, Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 March, 2007

With the Resistance, for a Just Peace in the Middle East
International Conference

Chianciano Terme, Province of Siena, Tuscany, Italy
Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 March, 2007

The national assembly of the promoting forces, which met last Sunday in Florence, decided to finally convene the international conference: "Against the Occupation, with the Resistance - with a Just Peace in Iraq, Lebanon and Palestine".

After the struggle of 2005, when the Italian government impeded the conference on order of the US, after the success of the campaign for the visas which seem to be granted this time, and with the renewed interest of different sectors of the Arab Resistance movement time has come to hold this important international convention.

On March 24/25 a wide range of Iraqi, Palestinian and Lebanese representatives (and other Arab countries) will unite. In this way we want to lend those a voice also on European soil who resist the imperialist aggressions. It will be the first time that such a conference is being held in Europe.

It will be an occasion to strengthen the solidarity of the anti-war movement with the peoples who are victims of this war of aggression led by the US. At the same time it will offer the possibility to better understand the situation in Iraq, Palestine and Lebanon by listening to the experiences of whose who resist and who are silenced by the corporate media.

In the near future we will publish the programme of the conference as well as the modalities of inscription and participation.

3) Good news from Somalia: occupations force under attack

When the US proxy invasion in Somalia by Ethiopian troops brought down the popular Islamic government in Mogadisho, we were neither astonished nor disappointed. For the time being the forces of popular resistance against the US empire do not have the capacities to withstand an all out attack in form of a regular war and to defend a state apparatus. This is true for Palestine, Afghanistan, Iraq and now also Somalia. But on an irregular level, in the asymmetric war the resistances have shown their capacity to hit the empire. This will be true also for Somalia.

As always Washington and its proxies, this time Addis Abeba, have cried victory and promised a swift pacification. But also this time this is nothing than wishful thinking. They hope that the can withdraw the Ethiopian occupation troops and stabilise a puppet government. But not one minute they ask themselves why the Islamic resistance could take power with the support of significant parts of the population. People not only ask for a solution of their social plight, they also want self-determination and to preserve their cultural identity. The US programme for Somalia is the exact contrary of the popular interest.

So it is only a question of time that also in Somalia the anti-imperialist guerrilla will spring up. When the corporate media reported about the first attacks on Ethiopian troops as well as governmental forces we not only welcomed this as good news but also as a confirmation of our analysis.

We are not only sure that the resistance against the US proxy forces will grow but we also lend our support to them. It is just another focus, another front in the democratic and anti-imperialist struggle against the US-led capitalist empire according to the old slogan "create two, three, many Vietnams".

4) Lebanon: two governments soon?
Interview with Samah Idriss, Beirut

Q: Was the general strike called by the opposition a success?

The opposition succeeded in paralyzing the country. Areas under the control of Hizbullah and Amal were closed. However the same cannot be said about those under Jumblatt, and those divided between Ja'ja', Aoun and Franjieh.

Q: So will the Siniora government withdraw?

No, the government, under US and French pressure, is not willing to accept the kind of participation the opposition wants, the "guaranteeing third".

Q: What will happen next?

The President of the Republic, Emile Lahoud, could declare the government "resigned", after which a new cabinet will be formed, but the "original" one will not accept. We might have two governments in that case. Members of the Parliament from the opposition may resign too.

Q: Is there a danger of civil war?

I fear yes. What we are about to witness is the beginning of an incipient civil war. Sectarian and especially Sunni-Shiite tension is mounting. Some what to provoke the Islamic Resistance and to force them into street wars.
