The development approval at False Cape was refused and under the Integrated Planning Act, this means that a development cannot proceed. However Cairns City Council has seen fit to issue an operational works permit to allows the developer to carry on as though he did get a development approval. This is the most blazon abuse of our system of government that I have personally experienced. False Cape is the most prominent coastal scenic landscape in Cairns. Nearly all of the boat traffic into and out off Cairns passes close this spectacular pristine granite peninsula. The proposed development is a medium density housing development, which does not sound too bad until one realises that the block are very narrow and very steep and the houses would almost touch each other. Given that Cairns is marketed at a scenic ecotourism destination, the conversion of our most important scenic assets into a medium to high density real estate erodes the heart and soul of what we have to offer and destroys Cairns as a truly special destination. Like the protestor in one of the photo’s below says, there should be an inquiry into what is going on at False Cape. There is no development approval, the issue of killer rock falls and debris flows has not been resolved and a number of matters are still before the courts on the basis the Councils decisions are invalid. These matters are creating a stench that simply will not go away. Below are some pictures of what is currently taking place at False Cape. The Bama (indigenous person) is holding up the remains of an important plant that was supposed to have been protected.
