Thousands of eligible young people fail to make their voices heard every time an election is held because they are not correctly enrolled.
Queensland Greens Senate candidate Drew Hutton and 21-year-old Greens candidate for Ryan Paul Swan will be holding a media conference on this issue in Anzac Park (just across from the GPO) in Queen Street at 11 a.m today.
The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) estimates that the national participation rate of young people aged 18-24 in elections is only 76% (AEC Annual Report 2003).
The Electoral Commission Queensland (ECQ) revealed that only 83% of young people in Queensland understood that enrolment was necessary in order to vote in elections in a 2003 report. Only 71% of the young respondents in Brisbane knew voting was compulsory.
Greens Senate candidate Drew Hutton is calling on eligible young people throughout Queensland to get enrolled and have their say.
"Young people have the right to be heard, and they should enrol to vote so they can exercise this right at the ballot box," Mr Hutton said.
"Students and other highly mobile people should check with the Electoral Commission to see if they are correctly enrolled," Mr Swan said.
Young people can obtain enrolment forms at Australia Post or any Electoral Commission Queensland office. People can confirm their enrolment is up to date at https://oevf.aec.gov.au.
