Coalition to address systemic failure in Child Safety
THE CHALLENGE
Nearly two years after Queensland going to the polls on the basis that the Premier wanted to fix Queensland’s failed child safety system, a Child Death Safety Review Committee Report has produced a scathing analysis of the Department.
The Report identified around half of the child death cases involving the Department of Child Safety were not actually reported to a special review committee within the legislated six-month timeframe.

The Report also identified problems relating to the quality of risk assessments, record keeping and inter-agency cooperation. In fact, in July 2005 the Department of Child Safety was forced to admit over 30% of the
children in care who had suffered abuse, were abused
again within 12 months, the worst result in all of Australia.
