The major parties have done nothing to alleviate the high price of petrol said Queensland Independent Senate Candidate, Selwyn Johnston, at a Kuranda meeting to discuss rising petrol prices in the bush.

"We have heard nothing from either the Liberal or Labor parties during this campaign, and quite obviously they have done nothing about petrol prices, and won't do anything after the election except give a clear run to the major petrol players, including governments, to play ducks and drakes with petrol prices," Selwyn Johnston declared when urging a major reduction in government taxes on petrol.

"The problem is, and has always been, that the government's huge rip-off of motorists in the form of taxes on petrol, now amounts to almost half the petrol dollar," he explained.

"Of major concern is that the price of petrol in the bush is too high, and has always been too high, and, is much higher than in the city where the big stink was raised when petrol hit the dollar mark some time ago."

"Petrol consumers and taxpayers are on their own when it comes to petrol pricing because the old gang in Canberra simply will not do anything to buck the international oil cartels or curtail the tax-aholics within their midst," Selwyn Johnston said.

Selwyn Johnston said a vote for either of the major political parties was a vote to keep petrol prices rising in Queensland.
