Seven million dead dolphins. It's a number almost too large to comprehend. But that's how many dolphins have died since the late 1950's from being caught in fishing nets to ultimately drown or suffer severe injuries. Dolphins, one of the most intelligent marine mammals, were tracked by fishermen, tangled in nets, and left to die, all for the tuna industry.
"The Australian Government must negotiate in good faith to set fair maritime boundaries with East Timor consistent with principles of international law" Ms Tucker said today.
The Greens NSW have urged environmentalists and commercial tuna fishers to remain vigilant against the supertrawler Veronica, warning the death ship may yet sweep into Australian waters.

Not so long ago the Federal Government issued closure notices for large areas of the Great Barrier Reef for the stated purpose of its conservation.
Knowing that such measures would cause enormous disruption they issued a scheme of compensation for commercial operators, fishermen, processors, and tourist operators who were seriously and detrimentally affected by the closures. Qualification for the compensation was quite tight and a ceiling of $200,000 was imposed. Lessees were effectively excluded and were left to come to some accommodation with their lessors as their only relief.
